The year is 1985 and Jim Gentes has just finished doodling what turns out to be the logo for his new company Giro Helmets. “Tour of Circuit”, as he calls it, embodies the ultimate feeling you get when riding your bike. Jim’s been secretly working on a new helmet design for a new emerging sport called Triathlon. Athletes have been asking for ways to cheat the howling winds during the long legs of their races and Gentes has feels he has the perfect helmet to give them an Advantage! Over night the brand explodes and within the first year Jim is filling orders worth $100,000 for his newest creation the Prolight.
4 years later Jim Gentes finds his brands in the spot light yet again. This time its in cycling’s most prestigious race, the Tour de France. A young American, Greg Lemond, uses the Areohead helmet to put in an astounding 8-second into his closest competitor, Laurent Fignon, to win one of his 5 tour titles. It was with this win, Giro cemented them selves into cycling history forever.
Over the next 10 years Giro continued to push the conventional designs of their counterparts with things like the Air Attack; a reinforced fiberglass shell that helps better manage impacts, the Bottle Rocket; the first modular water bottle with a wide mouth screw on top or the Roc-Loc; a securing system that greatly improves the fit of the helmet when the user is going over rough terrain.
This particular system is still found in all most all of Giro’s current helmet offerings, as well as many other manufacturers helmets.
It wasn’t till 1999 that Giro finally made the decision to enter the snow sports game and they did it with a BANG! The lightweight and vented Nine might have been the laughing stock of Giro’s competitors but the market swallowed it up and before they knew it they were atop the winter helmet world. 4 years later they introduced the first mainstream goggle to offer inter-changeable lenses, the Manifest.
Today Giro stands atop both the cycling and the snow sports world as one of the industries ers in advancements, and its reflected on our walls. With a great selection of helmets including the Ledge, Ledge Mips, Combyn and Zone Mips for adults and Launch helmet and goggle packages for kids we feel we’ve got your head totally covered, not to mention a great selection of Giro Goggles like the OnSet and Balance.
