Founded in garage in 1975, Jim Jannard began Oakley’s beginnings selling motocross grips out of the trunk of his car at races and events. Utilizing a new style of rubber, that is still used to this day in their sunglasses line up, Oakley helped changed the way both recreational riders and racers gripped their dirt bikes.
Over the next 5 years Jim continuously grew the Oakley offerings with things like number plates, protection and their introduction into the eyewear field with the first O-Frame goggles in 1980. Three years later, in 1983, Oakley launched their first ski goggle, called “Ski Goggle”. The following year, 1984, they launched their first sunglass “Factory Pilot” aimed specifically at the sports market. In 1985 Oakley launched their first casual sunglasses “Frogskin”. This was their first set of glasses that was manufactured outside of the United States. It was made in Japan.
Today, Oakley continues to be one of the leaders in all categories it operates in. With offerings ranging from clothing, eye wear and protection Oakley is the single largest manufacturer in the global ski market owning approximately 20% of the entire market. Travis Scott was recently appointed the Chief Visionary Officer.
